Frequently asked questions

We have grouped the most frequently asked questions about the window filter by topic. If you cannot find what you are looking for, message us on WhatsApp.

General

What is a window filter?

A window filter is a three-layer nanofiber membrane fitted to windows and doors like an insect screen. It lets air through and stops dust, pollen and tiny insects from getting in. It is also known as a new-generation insect screen, dustproof insect screen or pollen screen.

Does a window filter let air through?

Yes. The filter is designed to filter the air, not to block it. With the window open the room keeps airing. Like any filter it slows the airflow a little; in windy weather you will hardly notice, while on very still days the room may take a little longer to air than with an ordinary screen.

How is it different from an ordinary insect screen?

The holes in an ordinary insect mesh are small for flies and mosquitoes but large for dust and pollen. The nanofiber layer in the middle of the window filter also holds back fine particles in the air. You can find a detailed comparison on the window filter vs insect screen page.

Does a window filter stop dust completely?

No filter can hold back every particle in the air. A window filter holds back a large share of the dust coming through the window; windowsills and furniture get dusty noticeably more slowly. Regular cleaning is still needed for dust formed inside the home (textiles, rugs, pets).

Is it helpful for people with pollen allergy?

A window filter reduces the amount of pollen that gets in while the window is open. This makes opening the window, and especially airing the bedroom, more comfortable in pollen season. The filter is not a treatment; continue your allergy treatment with your doctor.

Can people see in from outside?

When the filter is fitted with its dark side facing out, it is hard to see in from outside in the daytime, while you can see out easily from inside. In the evening, when the lights are on indoors, the effect is weaker.

Does it block light? Can you see the view?

The filter lets most light through. Compared with ordinary mesh, it softens daylight a little and makes the view look slightly duller. Some of our customers also see this as a curtain that takes the edge off the sun.

Does it also stop mosquitoes and tiny insects?

Yes. As well as flies and mosquitoes, it keeps out tiny insects such as sand flies that can pass through an ordinary insect mesh.

Does it block smells and smoke?

It holds back some of the particles in smoke and soot, which eases the smoke coming in from outside. But because smell molecules are in gas form, it does not remove smells completely.

What happens in the rain?

The filter withstands outdoor conditions and is not damaged by rain. A wet filter keeps working once it dries. In long periods of heavy rain we recommend closing the window.

Product and size

What is the difference between the hook-and-loop and roll models?

The filter is the same; the difference is how it is fitted. The hook-and-loop model is made to fit your window and fitted directly to the frame with self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape. The roll model is fitted with spline into your existing screen frame in place of the mesh, or cut to the size you want.

Do you sell framed window filters?

No, we do not ship framed products. We ship the filter as a hook-and-loop kit or as a roll. If you want to use it framed, your screen maker can fit the filter roll into an existing or new frame.

How wide is the roll?

We ship the filter roll 160 cm wide, in any length you need. Our marketplace stores also carry ready-cut pieces in common sizes and long bulk rolls.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. We prepare the hook-and-loop filter to your window’s measurements. Send us your measurements and, if possible, a photo of your window on WhatsApp.

Can I cut the filter myself? Will the edges fray?

Yes, you can cut it easily with sharp scissors. Because the layers are permanently bonded, the cut edges do not fray.

Which side should face out?

The dark side of the filter should face out. That way the filter works best and it is hard to see in from outside.

Installation

Do I need an installer?

Not for the hook-and-loop model; scissors and a clean surface are enough. You can fit the roll model into your existing screen frame yourself; if you need a new frame, your screen maker can help.

Does hook-and-loop tape leave marks on the window frame?

When the tape is removed slowly, parallel to the frame, it leaves no noticeable mark on most PVC and aluminium frames. Any adhesive left on the surface can be cleaned off with an alcohol wipe. On painted wooden surfaces there is a risk of lifting the paint, so try a hidden spot first.

Does the window filter stop the window opening and closing?

Not when the tape is stuck to a part of the frame outside the opening sash’s range of movement. We recommend opening and closing the sash to check the tape line before fitting.

Can it be fitted to a balcony door?

Yes. The most practical way is to replace the mesh of a hinged screen door with window filter, so you can walk through freely. It can also be fitted with hook-and-loop tape on doors that are rarely used.

Can it be fitted to a pleated or roller insect screen?

Because pleated and roller screens work with folding or rolling mechanisms, the filter may not suit every system. If you have this type of screen, ask us with a photo of your system.

Cleaning and use

Can the window filter be washed?

Yes. Take the filter off and rinse it with lukewarm water from the outer side towards the inner side. Do not scrub it, and do not use detergent, bleach or a washing machine; refit it once it is dry.

How often does it need cleaning?

It depends on where your home is and the season: more often by roads, near building sites or in pollen season; less often in quiet areas. When the outer side has darkened noticeably, or the room starts to take longer to air, it is time to clean it.

How long does a window filter last?

A filter that is fitted correctly and cleaned regularly lasts for years. It is made from materials that withstand sun and weather. If airflow drops noticeably despite washing, or if it tears, we recommend replacing it.

Do cats damage window filters?

The filter’s protective outer layer is more durable than standard insect mesh and copes well with everyday contact. Even so, constant scratching by a cat that has made climbing a habit can damage any kind of mesh. For windows your cat climbs, see our tips for pet owners.

Can it be used in winter too?

Yes. In winter, soot from chimneys and exhaust increases; when you open the window briefly to air the room, the filter holds back some of these particles. There is no need to take the filter off in winter.
