Air conditioning or opening the window?

Air conditioning cools and circulates the air but does not bring in fresh air from outside. For fresh air you need to open the window. With a window filter, dust and pollen stay outside while the window is open; alternating it with the air conditioning is the most balanced approach.

Air conditioning or opening the window?

Short answer

Air conditioning and the window are not alternatives but complements. The air conditioning manages temperature; the window refreshes the air in the room.

What air conditioning cannot do

  • Most home air conditioners do not take in fresh air from outside; they recirculate indoor air.
  • In a closed room, carbon dioxide and humidity keep building up.
  • If its filters are not cleaned regularly, it can become a source of dust and mould.

Balanced use

  1. Open the window and air the room in the cool of the morning or evening.
  2. In the hot hours of the day, close the window and use the air conditioning.
  3. To stop dust and pollen pouring in while the window is open, fit a window filter.
