A window filter for balcony and garden doors

In summer the balcony door is the home’s biggest source of fresh air, but also where most dust, pollen and insects get in. A window filter can be used on doors too.

Two solutions for doors

1. Filter roll for a hinged screen door

If your balcony door has a hinged screen door, the most practical solution is to replace its mesh with window filter. The door keeps opening and closing, and you keep walking through freely. If you are having a new screen door made, ask your screen maker to use window filter instead of mesh.

2. Hook-and-loop filter

On garden or balcony doors that are rarely used, you can fit the filter to the door frame with hook-and-loop tape. When you want to go through, just peel one edge of the filter off the tape. This method is not practical for doors you use often.

Things to watch on doors

  • Bottom edge: The bottom edge of a door gets the most contact. Fit the filter roll into the frame taut and secure.
  • Wide openings: On very wide doors, using the filter in two pieces in a frame split by a middle bar is more durable.
  • Wind: On windy balconies, a door-type screen frame with a magnet or latch stops the filter from pushing the door open.
