Short answer
The aim of airing is to push stale indoor air out and let fresh air in. The most effective way is a short, strong change of air.
Airing correctly
- Open opposite windows. Opening windows on two sides speeds up the airflow.
- Keep it short. A room’s air is refreshed in a few minutes; in winter this reduces heat loss.
- Do it often. Repeat several times a day, especially after sleeping and cooking.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the window ajar all day: the air is not refreshed and heat escapes.
- Opening it at rush hour: that is when the most dust gets in.
- Opening it at midday in pollen season.
