What is a window filter?

A window filter is a thin filter membrane fitted to windows and doors like an insect screen; it lets air through and holds back dust, pollen, soot and tiny insects. New-generation insect screen, dustproof insect screen, pollen screen or nanofiber insect screen – it is also searched for under these names. Details: what is a window filter?

How does it work?

The Odera window filter has three layers: outer mesh, nanofiber membrane and inner mesh. The nanofiber membrane in the middle is a web of fibres much finer than a human hair. Air passes between the fibres, while dust, pollen and soot particles stay in the web. No chemicals are used; the filtering is purely mechanical.

What does it hold back, and what not?

Holds back: road and construction dust, pollen, mould spores, smoke and soot particles, tiny insects such as flies, mosquitoes and sand flies, and direct rain.

Does not hold back: all gases and smell molecules, dust formed inside the home, or pollutants in indoor air while the window is closed. A window filter is not a medical product and does not replace an air purifier.

Window filter vs insect screen

An ordinary insect screen only stops insects; its holes are far too large for dust and pollen. A window filter fits in the same place but also holds back fine particles. Like any filter it slows the airflow a little; on windy days you will not notice the difference. Details: window filter vs insect screen

Quick questions and answers

What is a window filter?

A window filter is a three-layer nanofiber membrane fitted to windows and doors like an insect screen. It lets air through and stops dust, pollen and tiny insects from getting in. It is also known as a new-generation insect screen, dustproof insect screen or pollen screen.

Does a window filter let air through?

Yes. The filter is designed to filter the air, not to block it. With the window open the room keeps airing. Like any filter it slows the airflow a little; in windy weather you will hardly notice, while on very still days the room may take a little longer to air than with an ordinary screen.

How is it different from an ordinary insect screen?

The holes in an ordinary insect mesh are small for flies and mosquitoes but large for dust and pollen. The nanofiber layer in the middle of the window filter also holds back fine particles in the air. You can find a detailed comparison on the window filter vs insect screen page.

Is it helpful for people with pollen allergy?

A window filter reduces the amount of pollen that gets in while the window is open. This makes opening the window, and especially airing the bedroom, more comfortable in pollen season. The filter is not a treatment; continue your allergy treatment with your doctor.

Does it also stop mosquitoes and tiny insects?

Yes. As well as flies and mosquitoes, it keeps out tiny insects such as sand flies that can pass through an ordinary insect mesh.

Do I need an installer?

Not for the hook-and-loop model; scissors and a clean surface are enough. You can fit the roll model into your existing screen frame yourself; if you need a new frame, your screen maker can help.

Can the window filter be washed?

Yes. Take the filter off and rinse it with lukewarm water from the outer side towards the inner side. Do not scrub it, and do not use detergent, bleach or a washing machine; refit it once it is dry.

How long does a window filter last?

A filter that is fitted correctly and cleaned regularly lasts for years. It is made from materials that withstand sun and weather. If airflow drops noticeably despite washing, or if it tears, we recommend replacing it.
