How do you fit a hook-and-loop window filter, step by step?

The hook-and-loop window filter fits to the window frame without drills or screws. Tape that is applied correctly holds the filter firmly for years, while the filter comes off in seconds for cleaning.

What you need

  • Odera hook-and-loop window filter (made to your size or from a roll)
  • Self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape (included in the pack)
  • Alcohol wipe or cleaning cloth
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tape measure

Step-by-step installation

  1. Mark the line

    Mark the line

Choose the line the tape will go on. It should be a flat, clean surface that does not get in the way of the opening sash and handle. On most PVC windows this is the inner face of the frame where the sash sits.

  2. Clean the surface

    Clean the surface

Wipe where the tape will go with an alcohol wipe to remove dust and grease. Wait until the surface is completely dry.

  3. Apply the tape

    Apply the tape

Peel back the tape’s backing paper a little at a time and stick the tape along the frame. Press every centimetre down with your finger. At the corners, cut the tape and butt the ends together.

  4. Let the tape settle

    Let the tape settle

Leave the tape alone for a while so the adhesive bonds fully to the surface. If possible, fit the filter a few hours later.

  5. Fit the filter

    Fit the filter

With the filter’s dark side facing out, press the top edge onto the tape. Then press the sides and bottom edge on, stretching the filter slightly.

  6. Check

    Check

Check that there are no gaps at the edges and corners. Small gaps left are where dust and insects can get through.

Tips

  • In cold weather, the tape may not stick well. If you are fitting it in winter, keep the surface and the tape at room temperature.
  • Stretch the filter, but do not force it. An over-stretched filter can pull the tape away at the corners over time.
  • Press down the corners. Corners are where dust and insects most often find a way in.
  • Check the window handle. Close and open the sash to make sure the handle and hinges do not catch on the filter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut the filter myself? Will the edges fray?

Yes, you can cut it easily with sharp scissors. Because the layers are permanently bonded, the cut edges do not fray.

Which side should face out?

The dark side of the filter should face out. That way the filter works best and it is hard to see in from outside.

Does hook-and-loop tape leave marks on the window frame?

When the tape is removed slowly, parallel to the frame, it leaves no noticeable mark on most PVC and aluminium frames. Any adhesive left on the surface can be cleaned off with an alcohol wipe. On painted wooden surfaces there is a risk of lifting the paint, so try a hidden spot first.

Does the window filter stop the window opening and closing?

Not when the tape is stuck to a part of the frame outside the opening sash’s range of movement. We recommend opening and closing the sash to check the tape line before fitting.
