Window filter or air purifier?

Both are used for cleaner home air, but they work in completely different ways. An air purifier filters the air in a closed room over and over; a window filter filters the air coming in from outside at the window.

How do they work?

Air purifier uses a fan to draw in the room’s air, pass it through a filter and return it to the room. It works best with the windows closed. It runs on electricity, and its filters need replacing at intervals.

Window filter is a passive filter fitted to the window. It uses no fan or electricity. With the window open, it holds back dust, pollen and tiny insects in the air coming in from outside. It is cleaned by washing.

Which one suits you?

  • If you open the window often and dust or pollen from outside bothers you: a window filter.
  • If you usually keep the windows shut and indoor sources such as dust and pet hair dominate: an air purifier.
  • Both together: The window filter reduces the load from outside, and the air purifier filters what remains inside. This is a complementary approach, especially in homes with family members who have allergies.
Staying in a closed room for a long time increases carbon dioxide and humidity, even with an air purifier. Regular airing matters in every case.
