Pollen and allergies

Can you open the window if you have a pollen allergy?

Someone with a pollen allergy can open the window, but should avoid the hours when pollen is heaviest and fit a pollen-catching filter to the window. A nanofiber window filter lets air through while keeping pollen grains outside. Always talk to your doctor about treatment.

Can you open the window if you have a pollen allergy?

Short answer

Shutting the window completely in pollen season often makes the home’s air heavy. A better way is to move your airing to the hours when pollen is low and fit a pollen-proof filter to the window.

When is pollen heaviest?

  • On dry, windy and sunny days
  • Usually from late morning until the afternoon
  • Just before rain, when the wind picks up

After rain, pollen in the air usually drops; this is a good time to open the window.

How does a window filter help?

Pollen grains are larger than the pores of the nanofiber membrane, so they stay on the surface of the filter. Air keeps passing between the fibres. For details, see window filter for pollen allergy page.

A window filter is not a medical product. If you have allergy symptoms, continue your treatment with your doctor.

More tips

  • Change your clothes and wash your hair when you come in.
  • Do not dry laundry outside in pollen season.
  • Vacuum or rinse the filter regularly.
