Types of insect screen mesh and how to choose the right one

When buying an insect screen most of us focus on the frame, but the mesh does the real work. We explain the options, from ordinary mesh to pet mesh and from pollen mesh to a nanofiber window filter, and when each is the right choice.

Why does the mesh matter?

The screen frame holds the mesh, but it is the mesh that decides whether flies, dust or pollen get through. By changing the mesh while keeping the same frame, you can completely change what your insect screen does.

Main types of mesh

Fibreglass and polyester mesh (standard mesh)

The most common type of mesh. It stops flies and mosquitoes, hardly blocks the air at all and is economical. It does not hold back dust or pollen.

Pet mesh

Thick-threaded, coated and tear-resistant. It is chosen in homes with pets. For dust and pollen it is no different from standard mesh; its thicker thread reduces the view a little.

Pollen mesh

Mesh that is more tightly woven than standard mesh or electrostatically charged. It holds back some of the larger pollen. Its effect on fine dust is limited.

Nanofiber window filter

Not a woven mesh but a three-layer membrane. Thanks to the nanofiber web in the middle it holds back dust, pollen and tiny insects together while letting air through. It is washable and does not fray when cut. How does it work?

What to watch out for when choosing

  • Airflow: The tighter the pores, the slower the airflow. A window filter is breathable but lets air through more slowly than standard mesh.
  • View: Tight, dark meshes make the view look slightly duller; in return they give privacy.
  • Durability: Sun-resistant materials last longer.
  • Cleaning: Check whether it is washable.
  • Frame fit: Thick membranes may need a thin spline in frames with narrow channels.
