Dust

Why does the windowsill get dirty so fast?

The windowsill darkens quickly because of the fine dust and soot carried in by the air coming through the open window. Ordinary insect mesh does not stop these particles; a nanofiber window filter lets air through while keeping most of the dust outside.

Why does the windowsill get dirty so fast?

Short answer

That grey layer on the windowsill is made of road dust, soot and pollen carried by the outside air. Every time the window opens, air flows in and the particles settle on the first surface they meet: the windowsill and the curtain.

Who brings the dust?

  • Traffic: Fine dust from tyre, brake and asphalt wear, and exhaust soot.
  • Construction and renovation: Mineral dust released into the air during cutting, breaking and excavation.
  • Wind: Soil, sand and dried plant fragments.
  • Heating: Stove and chimney smoke, especially in winter.

Why doesn’t the insect screen help?

The holes in a standard insect mesh are small enough to stop mosquitoes, but dust grains are many times smaller. That is why even a window with an insect screen soon has a dark windowsill. For details, see the dustproof insect screen page.

What can you do?

  1. Open the window early in the morning or late in the evening, not at rush hour.
  2. Wipe the windowsill with a damp cloth rather than a dry one; a dry cloth lifts dust into the air.
  3. In place of the insect mesh or directly on the frame, fit a window filter. The nanofiber membrane lets air through and holds back most of the dust.

Conclusion

A dark windowsill is not inevitable. Even if you cannot shut off the source of the dust, you can reduce the dust coming through the window. What is a window filter? page shows how it works, and in our shop shows the ready-made sizes.
